Shrink-swell prediction using the water balance method

Some possible inconsistencies within AS2870 are discussed with particular reference to the measurement of soil suction. An alternative design method is proposed which provides a means of predicting seasonal fluctuations in soil suction in response to climatic changes. An example is given which shows good agreement between observed and predicted. The benefits of the method include the incorporation of site specific factors such as slope and soil type, and the ability to incorporate risk assessment in the design.
