A Micro-Mechanical Approach into the Shear Behaviour of Rock Joints
Current methods to estimate the peak shear strength of rock joints rely predominantly on empirical relationships. The empirical nature of these models requires conservatism on the part of the designer. The Geotechnical Group at Monash University is currently developing a theoretical approach where the behaviour of the rock joint is being modeled. By understanding the mechanisms involved during shearing, it is hoped that the uncertainty of design can be minimized. This paper outlines the difficulties in correctly modeling rock joint behaviour and gives a brief outline of the theoretical approach being taken.
