Rethinking Ground Engineering for the Future: Advances and Innovations in Practice
The AGS WA 2026 Symposium, Rethinking Ground Engineering for the Future: Advances and Innovations in Practice, will bring together geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, researchers, contractors, asset owners, and regulators to examine how ground engineering practice is evolving in response to new tools, better data and changing project demands.
The symposium will showcase state-of-the-art practice, emerging research, and practical case histories, highlighting how advances in site investigation, ground characterisation, laboratory testing, monitoring, numerical modelling and digital technologies are improving decision-making and engineering outcomes.
Reflecting the diverse ground conditions and project challenges across Western Australia, the symposium will highlight innovations that strengthen design confidence, constructability, resilience, and sustainability across sectors including mining, transport infrastructure, ports, energy and remote assets.
While ground engineering continues to evolve rapidly, the symposium will maintain a strong focus on practical application, engineering judgement and risk management. The event will provide a forum for sharing lessons learned, innovative approaches, and future directions that support safer, more resilient, and more efficient ground engineering outcomes in Western Australia and beyond.

Abstract Submission
Abstract Submission
Abstracts will be assessed by the Symposium Committee on the basis of relevance, technical merit, originality, and practical significance.
1. Conditions of abstract submission:
- The author must be available to attend and present on the date of the symposium.
- The presentation must not be subject to further approval by client or employer organisations.
- Accepted abstracts will be included in the symposium booklet distributed to delegates.
- A PDF copy of the final presentation is compulsory and must be provided one week prior to the symposium for online distribution to delegates.
2. Submission of papers to the AGS Journal:
- Authors are strongly encouraged to submit a full paper to the AGS Journal; however, this is not mandatory for symposium participation.
3. Information required for abstract submission
Please submit a Word document containing the following, ideally in the Australian Geomechanics Journal format:
- Title of presentation
- Author’s full name(s)
- Author’s full affiliation, including position and name of company/university
- An abstract of less than 500 words; no specific format is required
4. Submission deadline:
- Abstract submission deadline: 1 August 2026
5. Presentation format and guidelines:
- Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to deliver a 15-minute presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions.
- Presentation guidelines will be communicated upon abstract selection.
6. Awards:
- Best Abstract: Recipient selected by the Symposium Committee.
- Best Technical Presentation: Recipient selected by audience through delegate voting via QR code during the symposium.
