Some Recent Developments in Quality Assessment and Control in Deep Mixing and Jet Grouting and their Engineering Implications

Deep mixing and jet grouting are commonly used methods of “chemical” ground improvement. This talk gives a brief summary of:
- the current state-of-the-practice in quality assessment and control in these two ground improvement methods,
- some of their shortcomings, and
- some findings from recent research and their implications on engineering practice.
An important outcome is a clearer understanding of the factors contributing to spatial variation of chemically admixed soils and how can we control or mitigate their influences. Changes to some current paradigms on quality assessment and control and measures to reduce spatial variation are also presented.

Dr Fook-Hou Lee is an emeritus faculty member at the National University of Singapore (NUS). His research interest covered primarily ground improvement, but also included offshore foundation engineering and geotechnical earthquake engineering, using centrifuge and numerical modelling. Dr Lee is fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering. He is also a registered Professional Engineer (Civil) as well as Professional Engineer (Geotechnical Specialist) and has consulted for more than 70 projects in Singapore and in the region.
