Engineering geology in analytical model development

Ian Shipway

This session will explore how engineering geologists contribute to the development of analytical models through a review of two dam foundation projects—one focused on soil mechanics and the other on rock mechanics. Emphasis will be placed on the processes used to characterise complex ground conditions and translate geological insights into reliable analytical frameworks.

The presentation will highlight the importance of collaboration between engineering geologists and multidisciplinary engineering teams. Participants will gain an appreciation of how strong partnerships enhance project outcomes, improve design confidence, and support the selection of appropriate analysis methods for challenging ground conditions.
